I was drawn into Mary's life, the story felt real even though it's fiction, and so interesting that it was tied to real people.

Excellent book. I learned a lot about the civil war from a slave's point of view. What a courageous person Mary Bowser was. Glad to see that it portrayed good white people who were sympathetic to the cause of abolishing slavery and were willing to risk their life for this cause. Will recommend this book to all my friends. Thank you Lois Laveen. Five star

Totally enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down as I got closer to the end. Even though I thought I knew about the events leading to the Civil War, I learned a lot from this book. Right now, I am hoping to visit some of the historical sites mentioned in this story. I look forward to Leveen's next book.
